Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

This lecture considered Patricia Burke Brogan's play Eclipsed which is set in both 1992 and 1963 and is structured around the character of Rosa and Rosa's search for details of her mother and her birth. Rosa’s story quickly becomes Bridget’s story whose traumas as an unmarried mother in 1960s Ireland are woven into a narrative of the many women whose children were given up for adoption by the Catholic Church. The ways in which mother and baby homes became prisons to punish and disappear unmarried mothers throughout the 20th century was the subject of this lecture.
