Description

Successful Stakeholder Event on the National Physical Activity Guidelines! I am thrilled to share highlights from our stakeholder consultation on Wednesday, 27th November, at the Hilton Dublin Kilmainham, where we discussed extending the National Physical Activity Guidelines to include specific populations: pregnancy/postpartum and those living with chronic diseases.

This important work is being commissioned by Dr Bláthín Casey Health Service Executive and Wellbeing and Department of Sport and Exercise Science - South East Technological University Prof Michael Harrison, who is heading the overall project  I am honored to contribute to the development of guidelines for pregnant and postpartum women, working alongside an exceptional team.

It was particularly inspiring to have Prof Anna Szumilewicz from Gdańsk University join us, bringing her expertise to the discussion. Our session was opened by Mary Horgan, Chief Medical Officer, and Dr Cliona Murphy.

The pregnancy/postpartum team, led by Dr Aisling Mc Grath , includes Dr Niamh Ní Chéilleachair (TUS), Prof Rita Santos Rocha (Polytechnic Institute of Santarém), and myself. Collaborating with such passionate professionals has been an incredible experience.

For the chronic conditions guidelines, Evan Matthews, PhD led the consultations, supported by Brona Kehoe (SETU), as well as colleagues from Maynooth University, Dublin City University and TUS Athlone. It was wonderful to connect with these colleagues in person and hear their valuable perspectives.

While it is important to provide clear, evidence-based guidelines, I also believe strongly that it’s time to move beyond just delivering messages. We need action. We need movement. This work is not just about “talking the talk”; it’s about helping people "walk the walk" —literally ! I feel passionately that we must start writing prescriptions for exercise alongside, medications.

Special thanks to all the stakeholders who attended and contributed their expertise. Your input is vital as we approach the final stages of this project. I am proud to represent SETU Research, Innovation and Impact and the Department of Sport and Exercise Science - South East Technological University as we help shape these impactful resources.
