The School of Science and Computing has positioning research as a fundamental element of its educational strategy. Over the past 30 years, the School has been at the center of research development at the University and has worked to ensure that research is a fundamental element of the Schools culture and that it is embedded within its undergraduate programmes. The School is home to two of the University's largest research centers and a number of research groups. In addition, the School supports the research activity of individual staff members. The School of Science and Computing also supports the research activity of the Walton Institute, SETU’s largest research facility and its only research Institute. These research Institutes, centres and groups are summarised below: The PMBRC and Walton Institutes are also part of Enterprise Ireland’s Technology Gateway programme, delivering close to market technology solutions for Irish industry in the pharmaceutical and healthcare (PMBRC) and mobile services (Walton) sectors. The Walton Institute emerged out of the School of Science and Computing and now operates in an autonomous, independent way. Postgraduate students of the Walton Institute are registered in the Department of Computing and Maths.
