Section 1: Background
After completing his Masters in International Economics & Finance at Maynooth University, Mr. Burke taught as a contract lecturer in the Department of Economics, Maynooth University from 1995-1997. From 1997 – 2000 Mr. Burke undertook a Master’s Degree by research in Trinity College Dublin under the supervision of Professor Philip Lane. During this time Mr. Burke acted as a teaching assistant in the Department of Economics teaching Quantitative Techniques and the subject Economic Analysis. Mr. Burke also acted as a research assistant to Professor Dermot McAleese working on the textbook Economics for Business. In 2000, Mr. Burke joined the teaching staff at the Institute of Technology Carlow (now South East Technological University, Carlow campus) as an Assistant Lecturer in Economics in the School of Business and Humanities. Mr. Burke progressed to the position of Lecturer in Economics in 2009 and has worked in this position to date.
Section 2: Academic and Research Experience
Mr. Burke has engaged in teaching duties at Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin and at the Institute of Technology Carlow (now South East Technological University, Carlow campus). Since joining the Institute of Technology Carlow in 2000 Mr. Burke has lectured in the Department of Business in the following discipline areas: Managerial Economics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, National Economics, International Economics, International Business, International Business Culture, Management, The Global Economy, and The Macroeconomy of Ireland. Mr. Burke has also been involved in the supervision of undergraduate dissertations across the areas of Management, Human Resource Management, International Economics & Finance and Supply Chain Management. In addition, Mr. Burke has engaged in new programme development at levels 8 and 9, class tutoring, membership of Academic Council, Secretary to the Academic Regulations Committee, Programme Board Secretary and membership of the School Postgraduate Research Programme Board. Presently, Mr. Burke supervises student dissertations at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Faculty of Business and Humanities.
Section 3: Current research interests include international trade policy, monetary policy, foreign exchange determination, gender equality, regional economic policy, the internationalisation of Irish SMEs, social enterprise, and sports ecology.
Section 4: Engagement and Collaboration
Mr. Burke has produced Budget Analysis reports used for local community radio in the Carlow, Kilkenny and South-East region and presented economic analysis on Beat FM.
Mr. Burke is also a member of SERNI (Social Economy Research Network of Ireland).
