Personal profile
Biography
Having begun my career in science, receiving my PhD from NUIG in 1993, I changed direction in 2004 and have been working in Adult and Further Education ever since. I completed my degree in Adult and Further Education in 2023 in South East Technological University, Waterford.
I worked with KCETB as an Adult Literacy Tutor and ESOL Tutor, teaching certified QQI courses, levels 1 - 3 in reading, writing, communications and other subjects, along with uncertified courses, particularly ESOL through the Refugee Resettlement Programme, before taking up my current role as Assistant Lecturer in the Literacy Development Centre in the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning, SETU Waterford. I teach at higher certificate level and supervise research projects at undergraduate and masters level. My particular research interest is second language acquisition and retention in adult refugees with a background of trauma. I continue to work on this research topic with the aim of introducing trauma-informed approaches to ESOL provision in Ireland.
