Biography

Eileen Farrell is a lecturer in the Department of Humanities  since 2010 . She lectures in the area of Sociology and Social policy. She is a qualified social care worker and has an MA in Social Work. Prior to taking up her lecturing post she worked as a residential social care worker . This involved caring for the children and young people within the home and supporting them in all aspects of their daily lives, working as a member of a social care team, interdisciplinary work, record keeping and report writing, key working and planning with individual children, supporting young people in their transition form care to independent living. She also worked as a Probation Officer for eight years and spent over six of these years working as a prison-based Probation Officer in Mountjoy (Men’s), Midlands and Portlaoise Prisons. She also worked as part of a community probation team for two years. While working for the Probation Service her role involved assessing the levels of risk of offending, providing risk assessment reports to the Court Services and the Parole Board, supporting offenders in the transition from prison to the community, facilitating group work and monitoring offenders within the community. During my time as a probation officer, she also supervised social work students who were on supervised professional practice placement from UCD and Trinity College Dublin. 

She teaches the following subject areas, Social Policy, Sociology, Introduction to Social Care, Research Skills, Criminal Justice and Supervised Professional Practice Placements. Supervision of Dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

In 2020 she was the recipient of  a Teaching Hero Award 2020 from the National Forum for Enhanced Teaching and Learning and the  National Students Union of Ireland.
