Dr. Maria McEvoy has been a lecturer in psychology at SETU since 2004 and has taught psychology modules including social psychology, psychological disorder and mental health and lifespan developmental psychology, across a number of undergraduate degree programmes ncluding psychology, arts, social care, early childhood studies and criminal justice. In 2012, she graduated from SETU with a Master of Arts in Adult Teaching & Learning in Further & Higher Education. She has also delivered guest lectures to postgraduate students at Dublin City University on her research areas, vaginismus in the Irish context and grounded theory methodology.

CURRENT RESEARCH

Dr. Maria McEvoy was enrolled in Dublin City University’s part time PhD Programme from 2014-2022 under the supervision of Dr. Rosaleen McElvaney and Dr. Rita Glover in the Department of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health. Her area of research interest is the experience of vaginismus for Irish women and couples. This study is the first known study of vaginismus in Ireland for almost forty years and was the first study to build a theoretical model of vaginismus within an Irish context from the perspective of couples and health care providers. She completed her PhD in 2022 and continues to advocate for greater awareness of vaginismus and for more sensitive and ethical approaches to treatment. POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH

In 2000, Dr. Maria McEvoy graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BA Honours Degree in Psychology. In the same year, she began her postgraduate research at the psychology department in Trinity College. Her area of interest was the role of persistent primitive reflexes in learning difficulties. She graduated in 2002 with a Masters of Science in Psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics.
