Biography

Professor Marie Claire Van Hout was appointed as Vice President Research, Innovation and Impact at South East Technological University in June 2024.

Professor Marie Claire Van Hout holds a PhD in Sociology of Addictions (2010) from Teesside University, and a PhD in Law (International and European Human Rights) (2023) from Liverpool John Moore’s University. She has extensive Master of Science qualifications; Health Promotion (2003, Bath Spa University); International Addiction Studies (2009, joint award Kings College London/University of Adelaide/Virginia Commonwealth University); Health Professions Education (2017, joint award University of Maastricht/Suez Canal University) and holds a Master of Laws (2021, Dublin City University). She graduated in 2001 with a First Class Honours in Business Studies (Recreation and Leisure Management) from Waterford Institute of Technology.

Professor Marie Claire Van Hout was appointed as Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences at Waterford Institute of Technology in 2004, and in 2017 was promoted to Senior Lecturer. She became Professor of Public Health Policy and Practice at Liverpool John Moore’s University in late 2017, where she also served as Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange, and Head of Global Health at the Institute for Health Research. She holds various Adjunct Professorships in Ireland, South Africa, the United States and Portugal, and is Vice Chair of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Life Sciences Panel.

Research Interests

Professor Marie Claire Van Hout has had a successful inter-disciplinary research and knowledge exchange career, with over €14 million secured in research funding from Europe (FP7, Horizon), Irish and United Kingdom Research Councils, and industry (pharmaceutical) channels. Her global health research concentrates on health inequalities and human rights of marginalised groups (people who use drugs, people living with HIV and/or viral hepatitis, prisoners and immigration detainees, sexual minorities, migrants and refugees, people affected by gender based violence). Her research projects have operated in Ireland, the United Kingdom, across European member states, Australia, the Middle East, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. She is well connected internationally and has published extensively, with over 300 peer reviewed journal articles including in the Lancet and Lancet series journals (to date). She regularly consults for the World Health Organization, Council of Europe, the European Union Agency for Drugs and the United Nations (UNAIDS, UNODC, UNICEF, UN Women) as substantive human rights expert.
