Personal profile
Biography
I am a lecturer in the Department of Computing in SETU Carlow. Academically, I hold a BSc (Hons) in Computing from TUS Midlands and an MSc in Computing from TU Dublin. I also hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Third Level Teaching and Learning from TU Dublin. I am currently a PhD candidate in Technology Enhanced Learning at Lancaster University.
Professionally, my background is primarily in systems administration and various backend technical consultancy roles. Professional certifications I have previously achieved include Cisco, VMWare, Red Hat, Microsoft and Sun Microsystem (Pre-Oracle!).
Research Interests
I have a strong interest in the role of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in higher education, particularly in how emerging tools and techniques are integrated into teaching practice. My research is informed by Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), through which I explore how technologies mediate and transform pedagogical activity within specific institutional and socio-cultural contexts.
My doctoral research investigates the use of Generative AI within computer science education in Irish Technological Universities. Specifically, I am exploring how computer science lecturers incorporate and use GenAI as part of their teaching practice.
Teaching
My current teaching includes Operating Systems, Secure Systems Administration (undergrad), Advanced Incident Handling and Infrastructure for Big Data (postgrad).
I am a long-time Linux and open source enthusiast. I actively promote open technologies within my modules and encourage students to engage with real-world practices. I also advocate for the use of Capture the Flag (CTF) events as an engaging and academically valuable approach to learning, helping students develop problem-solving, cybersecurity, and collaboration skills in a dynamic, challenge-based format.
