Dr Cawley began his academic training in University College Dublin where he completed an honours degree in Science (major in Computer Science). He then worked for a number of years in industry, mainly in large multi-national IT companies. During this time he attended Dublin City University where he graduated with an MBA. In 2009 he returned to education full time to pursue a PhD in Software Engineering, and was conferred with his doctorate from the University of Limerick. His thesis focused on the
effects of regulatory controls on the software development life-cycle. In particular he examined the feasibility of applying lean and agile techniques to the development of medical device software.
Since then he has been employed in third level education in Ireland. He is currently working as a lecturer and researcher in South East Technological University. Prior to this he was a lecturer and researcher in Computing at Institute of Technology Tallaght, the National College of Ireland (NCI), and Research assistant at Lero-The Irish Software Research Centre at the University of Limerick.
