Dr Rejwanul Haque is a faculty member in the department of Computing, South East Technological University (SETU), Carlow, Ireland. Rejwanul obtained his PhD (computer science and engineering) in 2011 from Dublin City University (DCU), Dublin, Ireland. He received SFI PhD fellowship in 2008 to carry out his PhD study at School of Computing, DCU, where he collaborated with a world-leading Machine Translation (MT) team of DCU.
Between 2011–18, he worked in the translation and localisation industry in the UK and served two translation service companies. In industry, his main duties were to develop improvements for the company’s state-of-the-art MT offering. He was part of the Lingo24’s MT team who developed the competitive MT solutions (MT API, PEMT, Adaptive MT, Neural MT etc.) for them. Dr Haque was part of the Applied Language Solutions MT team who developed the then state-of-the-art cloud-based self-served MT system ‘SmartMATE’.
He rejoined the DCU’s MT team in 2018, worked in an industry-oriented project at the ADAPT Centre, DCU, and executed the planned deliverables for ADPAT’s industrial partner Huawei Noah’s Ark. Between 2019–21 he worked as a Research Fellow at ADAPT after securing a grant of €189,924 with a successful application to Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Action H2020. Dr Haque was appointed as Lecturer at National College of Ireland (NCI), Dublin, in 2020. He served NCI for two years, developed several MSc programmes (AI/AI for Business) at NCI and was programme director of the MSc AI programme.
Dr Rejwanul Haque's research interests include the emerging areas of Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning. His research mainly deals with different machine translation (MT) problems such as terminology translation, developing sustainable MT models, interactive MT, fairness and ethical use of MT, low-resource translation, domain adaptation. Although his primary research area is MT, his interests also include document analysis (e.g. question-answering, text classification and summarization), social media analytics and information extraction. Rejwanul has published 70+ papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences. He is an active member of professional bodies such as EAMT, ACL, acts as PC member in NLP conferences and as reviewer in reputed journals like ACM-TALLIP, LREV.
Dr Haque collaborated with Microsoft Ireland, the ADAPT centres industrial partner. Microsoft Ireland has partially funded two PhD students at the School of Computing, DCU, who he supervised to completion (2019-2023). He won the ADAPT Recognition Awards 2020 as part of the Choosing our Future team in the category of "Outstanding Contribution to Education and Public Engagement''. The team developed a platform for facilitating Citizen's Assembly for COVID-19 in 2020.
Rejwanul brought in funding to the department for hiring PhD students (SETU PhD Scholarship Funding) in 2023 and 2024. He is currently supervising two PhDs at SETU Carlow, and both students are investigating specific MT problems. He also brought in collaborators from academic and industry, and is currently collaborating with the ADAPT team members of DCU and TCD, and the renowned AI/NLP researchers of University Saint-Etienne and La Rochhelle University (France).
