Biography

Dr Susan Flynn is Head of Department of Arts, and Senior Lecturer, at South East Technological University in Waterford. Susan holds a PhD in Equality Studies, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK and a Research Associate of the Equality Studies Centre in UCD. She chairs the SETU Race Equality Forum, and is a member of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion comittee. Susan also chairs the Analysing Social Change research group. She is the SETU representative on the EU Conexus Social, Cultural & Human Sciences Institute (SCHSI). She is also a member of 'Practice-Led Arts and Creative Engagement' (PLACE) working group and is Board Member of the Irish Humanities Alliance. She has lectured, researched and led a number of equality, diversity and inclusion projects over the past 20 years. Before joining SETU Waterford, Susan was Director of eduCORE research centre at SETU Carlow. Previously, Susan acted as Senior Lecturer at University of the Arts, London. Susan's doctoral research applied a Foucauldian lens to the rise of professionalism, particularly in the context of abilities, and ideologies of work. Her research has subsequently explored aspects of the self in relation to society, work, education and citizenship. Recent research has explored the effects of Smart discourse on personhood.

Research Interests

Susan's research centres on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and social and cultural practices. Susan is author/editor of 9 books as well as multiple peer reviewed academic articles and book chapters, all of which are concerned with the central topic of equality and the self.

Current EU Research Projects:

EU COST Action, 'Transnational Family Dynamics in Europe' management committee member.

EU Conexus 'Community Engagement through Arts and Culture', work package member, and SETU representative on the Joint Research Institute.

EU CITO project member.

Teaching

Susan currently teaches 'Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for Transformative Research' on the structured PhD Programme. She has extensive experience in teaching and management accross Higher Education.
