Project Details
Description
This project involved the development of a novel high power optical fiber isolator material from a proven high verdet constant laser glass.
Layman's description
Optical isolators are devices which prevent unintentional feedback in optical fiber networks. Such feedback can destroy the coherence properties of these networks and as a result the information capacity collapses. This project investigated a novel high power optical isolator material.
Key findings
The project established that it was possible to process the high verdet constant material into forms suitable for high power isolator application. During the project a serendipitous discovery was made relating to the realisation of novel miniaturised spectrometers and this idea was successfully protected and licensed to an external company.
