A biosensor includes a light transmissive optical component (18) comprising a plurality of optical fibres fused side-by-side, the fibres extending between and terminating at opposite faces of the component for transmission of light through the component. A gold film is coated on one face of the optical component, and a plurality of nanohole arrays are formed in the gold film.
