Abstract

The present invention relates to an isolated nitrile-metabolising Arthrobacter strain deposited under NCIMB 41855 and to amide or acid- producing mutants and variants thereof. Also provided is an isolated nucleotide sequence or polypeptide obtainable from the nitrilemetabolising Arthrobacter strain of the invention wherein the isolated nucleotide sequence or polypeptide encodes or is an isonitrile hydratase. The strain, isolated nucleotide sequence or polypeptide of the invention may be used in a process for producing an amide or a carboxylic acid by metabolising nitrites such as 3-hydroxyglutaronitrile, 3-hydroxy-butyronitrile and 3-hydroxy-phenylpropionitrile to form corresponding amides and carboxylic acids.
