Abstract

The present invention relates to an isolated Nitrile-Metabolising Pantoea strain deposited under NCIMB 41854 and to amide or acid-producing mutants and variants thereof. Also provided is an isolated nucleotide sequence or polypeptide obtainable from the Nitrile-Metabolising Pantoea strain of the invention wherein the isolated nucleotide sequence or polypeptide encodes or is a nitrilase. The strain, isolated nucleotide sequence or polypeptide of the invention may be used in a process for producing a carboxylic acid by metabolising nitriles such as 3-hydroxyglutaronitrile, 3-hydroxy-butyronitrile and 3-hydroxy-phenylpropionitrile to form corresponding carboxylic acids.
