Beyond Words: The Academic Podcasting Space and the Influence of Artificial Intelligence

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstract

Abstract

Podcasting is emerging as a medium for knowledge exploration and dissemination among scholars of various disciplines. Despite its apparent simplicity compared to video production, podcasting requires a diverse skill set, such as interviewing, audio recording, and editing. These skills may pose a challenge to individual academics or small teams who may not readily possess them.

The podcast production process is often perceived as a linear progression, moving from Preparation to Recording, then Editing, and finally Publication, as outlined in Copeland & McGregor’s ‘A Guide to Academic Podcasting’ (2021). However, in practice, this process can be iterative, with steps such as re-recording unsatisfactory audio revealed during the Editing phase. This necessitates workflow adjustments, which can be facilitated by Artificial Intelligence. For instance, AI could assist in transcribing audio content.

One of the complexities introduced in the academic context is the process of peer-review. The question arises: Can podcasts be peer-reviewed in the same way as journal articles or conference papers? This presentation will delve into this issue, exploring the potential models for peer review in the context of academic podcasting.

This presentation will also introduce a general framework for scholarly podcast production. This framework will provide a structured approach to podcast production, addressing the challenges faced by academics and suggesting ways to leverage AI in the process.

Finally , the presentation will explore the continuum of academic value, examining how different forms of scholarly output, including podcasts, are recognised in the Academy. This will involve a discussion on the potential of podcasts as a legitimate and valued form of academic output. This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in academic podcasting, and how AI can play a role in this emerging field.
