Abstract
Case studies of manufacturing firms have shown knowledge retention in industrial settings is critical. The retirement of skilled technicians can cause important knowledge to drain from the firm. Few recent case studies of cost-oriented maintenance management systems for manufacturing processes have appeared in literature to date. A manufacturing facility is presented here and the skills of the maintenance technician workforce analyzed. A manufacturing engineering graduate was interviewed ascertaining the relevance of an Irish third level qualification in preparation for the workforce internationally. An investigation into open source maintenance software programs is made focusing on adaptability for developing countries.
