Abstract
On the 5th of March 2020 the Odeon Cinema, Waterford was full to capacity with an audience eager to see the first live broadcast of an Irish theatre company. The company was Druid and the production was Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, in a version by Tom Murphy. The production was live streamed to cinemas across Ireland direct from the Black Box Theatre, Galway. Sadly for the audience in Waterford the sound didn't work and it seemed at first that the audience would go home disappointed. Dr Kealy, invited by a fellow audience member, delivered an off-the-cuff lecture on The Cherry Orchard using the silent backdrop of Druid's production to illustrate how the play was ripe for Murphy's version which situated the play in an Anglo-Irish context. Dr Kealy's pre-teen daughter didn't quite know whether to be mortified or proud!
