Abstract
The GAA is an organisation like no other. As a volunteer organisation of great social, educational, commercial, sporting and symbolic significance in Irish life, its organisational practices are worthy of inquiry. Across the 2,600 clubs that constitute the GAA at community level there is wide and intriguing set of organisational forms in this culturally distinctive organisation. The uniformity of the overall organisation belies a huge amount of innovation and diversity. From our broad-based project that aspires to capture and make sense of some of that diversity- the key theme of family and GAA club leadership emerged, and this paper seeks to explore and theorise that important nexus.
