Abstract

This study identifies and analyses news values in discourses on informal settlements during the Covid-19 pandemic in Argentine media. Two platforms were selected for investigation, Clarín, an elite and mainstream publication, and La Garganta Poderosa, a relatively new and community media. Two specific events were chosen for analysis, the death of social activist Ramona Medina who denounced the infrastructural issues in CABA’s Villa 31 (May 2020) and the eviction of 2,500 families from the Guernica encampment (October 2020). Using a qualitative CDA-informed methodological approach of Discursive News Value Analysis (DNVA) (Bednarek and Caple 2017), this study traces the linguistic and semiotic strategies used in representations of these two events. Results indicate that news values of Impact, Negativity, Timeliness and Consonance dominated Clarín’s coverage while Proximity, Personalisation, International Solidarity and Human Rights characterised La Garganta Poderosa’s representation of these events.
