Power Dynamics and Participation: an Investigation of Geoscience and Climate Education in Ireland from the Young People's Perspective.

Abstract

Climate change has led to problems like loss of biodiversity, rising sea levels, and various health risks. Future generations, in particular, will inherit fewer resources and face more severe risks than ever before. This study looks into how Irish agencies, including schools, government bodies, and nonprofits, are informing young people about environmental issues. It also explores how teaching about climate can contribute to building a healthy democracy, where Irish youths actively participate in shaping environmental policies. Unlike previous research that mainly assesses the success of government policies based on stated actions or outcomes – such as achieving environmental sustainability or reducing inequalities in education - this study focuses on the real impact of these policies on individuals. Policies are often developed without considering the actual experiences of people, leading to solutions that do not fit the realities and needs of many social groups. This paper investigates the attitudes on climate awareness initiatives with a diverse group of young people aged 18–25 as members of the Research Advisory Groups (RAG), where they serve as co-researchers by assisting in the development of the research instrument and co-analyzing the collected data. Participants will share their experiences and suggestions in focus groups to help enhance Ireland's response to climate change. Our analysis is expected to show a direct correlation between democracy and education for environmental sustainability, and overall, will help increase public engagement in politics. The conclusion drawn is that educating young people about climate change prepares them for the uncertainties it brings. Additionally, it empowers them to actively collaborate with stakeholders in designing policies that address these challenges effectively.
