Abstract

The English Department in SETU is delighted to publish a book of essays on Shakespeare’s Hamlet in collaboration with the Theatre Royal, Waterford. The Hamlet guide is published in addition to the SETU guides available on Shakespeare’s King Lear, Macbeth, Othello and the Tempest. The essays focus on key themes and tropes in Hamlet, and underline the continuing relevance of the play, which is about betrayal, death, sexuality and the very nature of identity. It is about all the questions that humanity has grappled with throughout history, questions that we continue to grapple with today.
The guides are designed to support students in their autonomous learning and secondary research in preparation for their exams. Hamlet is one of the texts prescribed for study for the Leaving Certificate 2024.
